Fortune Cookie Friday: If Only…
“I knew I should’ve taken that left turn at Albuquerque.” Do you recognize this iconic phrase from Bugs Bunny in the 1953 Chuck Jones-directed animated short, “Bully for Bugs”?
The gag involves Bugs traveling underground to his preferred destination and popping out in all the wrong places, from a bullfight in Mexico, a Sultan’s cave in the Arabian Desert, and the South Pole. Usually, comedy ensues as he navigates the consequences of taking the wrong turn.
Life is all about choices, and we must accept the consequences of the choices we make. Unfortunately, we may linger too long on what might have been.

If only Bugs had taken that left turn, we wouldn’t have laughed over him outwitting a bull, the Sultan’s guards, and an Inuit hunter (albeit in the South Pole—don’t get me started on the errors in this episode; it’s a cartoon, after all).
Would Bugs Bunny be just as funny if he made it to Coachella Valley, Pismo Beach, or the Coney Island Baths? We will never know, and we shouldn’t worry about it.
Reflecting on the if onlys in our lives is a waste of time. We can’t do anything to change the past, and worrying only leads to regrets and depression.
We are bound to make mistakes in life. When we do, we can use some of Bug’s techniques to get through them.
Stay Calm
Maintain our composure under pressure, even when faced with danger.
Find Humor
Use humor to defuse the situation. Some mistakes are funny, and we shouldn’t take them too seriously.
Think Creatively
Find creative solutions to solve problems and think outside of the box.
It’s okay to look back at what we’ve done so we can learn from our past experiences. We certainly don’t want to make the same mistakes, but the past is behind us, and we can only move forward in life.

We must focus on what’s in front of us if we want to succeed. Yes, there will be some risks ahead, but not every mistake results in something terrible. Happy accidents can occur. We might even find that we aren’t lost but taking the scenic route.
When we come to a fork in the road, we should check our map and compass, use the knowledge we gained in life, or follow our intuition. When in doubt, choose the road less traveled; it always has the best carrots.
Well, that’s all folks!
