The Big Wood – Creepy Crawlers
I apologize for not posting in a while. Spring is such a busy time for our family. Mr. Otter has been helping Mr. Beaver divert the water flow from our rushing river. The lake downstream has risen considerably. I hope that the rains will stop long enough for the ground to soak it up.
Our little home on the bank has fared well, thanks to the surrounding rocks. We usually are not concerned about the erosion of our den. Our biggest concern right now is the spiders.
We always have spiders in the spring. Tiny spiderlings float on little webs attached to the tall grass and branches, while their larger versions make sticky networks from every crevice of our home.
This morning we awoke to a labyrinth of webs. The busy eight-legged beasts managed to cover almost everything during the night. After Mr. Otter left, the children and I spent the day cleaning the den. Benjamin was extremely helpful. He procured a short willow branch to use as a duster, and we were able to reach areas that, I am ashamed to say, have not seen some cleaning in a while.
My friend Celia the shrew brought her children down for a visit and feasted on the spiders. They made a fantastic game out of chasing them down. Now, with the den clean, we can all sit back and relax for a bit.
